Labiaplasty, also known as a labia reduction, is a surgical procedure I perform. It reduces and reshapes excess skin flaps on either side of the vagina.
Labiaplasty is contouring for the genital region.
Women seek out labiaplasty, or contouring of the labia, for many reasons. Some experience a bulge that’s visible in figure- hugging clothing such as bathing suits, leggings, or workout clothes. Others are uncomfortable while bicycling or feel self-conscious in intimate situations. Some women are born with excess labial tissue but most commonly the labia stretch and become redundant after childbirth. The labia minora—which starts barely visible—is usually affected the most and protrudes outside the labia majora with age.
Labiaplasty is now Common & Acceptable
Labiaplasty is a very straightforward procedure that can dramatically reshape the vulva area in women with little to no side effects. Women are now realizing they don’t have to live with the discomfort, pain, or embarrassment of excess labial tissue. This may be why in 2024, more than 10,000 women had the procedure done by a board certified plastic surgeon, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery statistics.
What Happens During a Labiaplasty?
During a labiaplasty (which typically takes one to two hours), the excess tissue of the labia minora is trimmed and removed from the labia minora (which is the smaller “inner lips” of skin surrounding the vagina). Occasionally the labia majora is also reduced, but most often it is the labia minora that needs correction.
During a labiaplasty, which is performed under sedation and local anesthesia, I first carefully mark the tissue to be removed. Then I trim the excess labial tissue, being sure to cut in areas where the scar can be hidden in a natural fold. The skin is then closed using dissolvable stitches. Patients can typically go home about an hour after the surgery is completed.
Light to moderate-intensity exercise can typically resume in a week, and sex can usually resume 3 to 6 weeks after the surgery.
Labiaplasty Enhances Your Comfort & Confidence
Labiaplasty is a life-changing procedure for many women, offering both physical comfort and a boost in self-confidence. Whether you’re experiencing discomfort due to enlarged or asymmetrical labia or simply seeking aesthetic improvements, labiaplasty can provide a solution tailored to your needs. At Dr. Tracy Pfeifer’s clinic, we specialize in delivering expert, compassionate care, ensuring that every patient feels comfortable and informed throughout their journey.
Patient Satisfaction
My patients who opt for this surgery are incredibly pleased with the results. This mirrors national satisfaction rates; one survey found that there’s an overall satisfaction rate of 97% for women undergoing labiaplasty. This simple procedure results in a noticeable difference – and can dramatically change how a woman feels about herself.
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce and reshape the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) or, in some cases, the labia majora (the outer vaginal lips). Many women opt for this procedure for a variety of reasons, including:
- Physical discomfort: Enlarged or asymmetrical labia can cause discomfort during physical activities such as exercise, sexual intercourse, or even while wearing tight clothing.
- Aesthetic concerns: Some women may feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia, which can affect their confidence.
- Medical reasons: In some cases, enlarged labia can lead to recurrent infections or hygiene issues.
At Dr. Pfeifer’s clinic, we understand that each woman’s needs are unique. Our goal is to provide personalized care that addresses both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the labia, helping you feel more comfortable and confident in your body.
Why Do Women Choose Labiaplasty?
There are many reasons to choose labiaplasty, and it’s important to remember that there is no “right” or “wrong” reason for seeking this procedure. The decision is deeply personal and can be motivated by:
- Physical Discomfort
Many women experience discomfort due to enlarged labia, which can cause irritation, chafing, and pain during everyday activities. This discomfort can be particularly noticeable during exercise, cycling, or sexual intercourse. Labiaplasty can alleviate these issues by reducing the size of the labia, allowing for greater comfort. - Aesthetic Concerns
For some women, the appearance of their labia can lead to feelings of self-consciousness or embarrassment. Whether due to genetics, aging, or childbirth, the labia may appear elongated or asymmetrical. Labiaplasty can help reshape the labia, creating a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance. - Improved Confidence
Feeling good about your body can have a profound impact on your overall well-being. Many women report a significant boost in confidence following labiaplasty, both in intimate situations and in their day-to-day lives. By addressing both functional and aesthetic concerns, labiaplasty can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin.
The Labiaplasty Procedure: What to Expect
Labiaplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on your preference and the complexity of the surgery. The procedure generally takes about one to two hours.

There are two primary techniques used in labiaplasty:- Trim Method: This is the most common technique, where the excess tissue along the edge of the labia is trimmed and sutured for a more streamlined appearance.
- Wedge Method: In this technique, a wedge-shaped piece of tissue is removed from the middle of the labia, preserving the natural edge while reducing the overall size.
Dr. Pfeifer will recommend the technique that best suits your anatomy and aesthetic goals

Recovery after Labiaplasty
Recovery from labiaplasty is typically straightforward, with most patients returning to their normal activities within one to two weeks. However, it’s important to follow post-operative care instructions to ensure optimal healing. Some key points to keep in mind during recovery include:
- Swelling and Discomfort: Mild swelling and discomfort are normal in the first few days. Dr. Pfeifer will provide pain management options to keep you comfortable.- **Avoiding Strenuous Activity**: It’s important to avoid strenuous activities, including exercise and sexual intercourse, for at least four to six weeks to allow for proper healing.
