Who Can Benefit From Liposuction?
Liposuction is best suited for patients who have diet-resistant areas of excess fat. Obese patients are not considered good candidates for the procedure. We have found that the best liposuction results are obtained when patients work with a certified nutritionist.
Many areas of the body can be treated including the following:
- Abdomen
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Hips
- Knees
- Chin
- Back
The cost of liposuction will vary depending on how many areas are treated. In New York City most plastic surgeons will charge separately for different areas.
The Liposuction Procedure
The tumescent liposuction technique is appropriate for most patients, which means the targeted fat will first be saturated with a special fluid containing lidocaine. This provides comfort and easier removal. Through a small incision, Dr. Pfeifer inserts a tube called a cannula to manipulate and subsequently remove body fat. For safety reasons, there is a limit to the total amount of fat that can be removed.
After Surgery
The downtime necessary after liposuction will depend on the extent of the procedure, so it’s best to discuss your specific case with the doctor. Many patients return to normal activities in as little as two days. Swelling and bruising can occur after liposuction, but once these issues subside, patients are able to appreciate a new, enhanced body contour.
Many patients ask us what type of liposuction is the best; is it laser liposuction, SmartLipo, tumescent liposuction, or ultrasonic liposuction? All of these methods are actually very similar, so we tell our patients to focus more on the skill of the plastic surgeon rather than the equipment used.
