Breast Augmentation Care: Making a Quick Recovery

Learn about recovery times and what you can (and can’t) do after breast augmentation

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery might seem intimidating, but with the right care, the right follow-up, and the right steps, you can actually return to your active lifestyle pretty quickly. Let’s take a look at some post-surgical FAQs and, hopefully, dispel some of those fears:

Expected recovery time

Many women will be able to return to work within five to seven days. If you have a career that requires light physical duties, such as working at a desk or taking phone calls, you probably fall into this group. However, if you have a job that requires significant physical activity, such as lifting objects or working with your hands, it may take as long as two weeks to get back into the swing of things. This is because your muscle may be sore and prevent full activity such as lifting.

What you can do after your procedure

During the first couple of weeks, you may be limited in the types of activity you can perform – but you can lift your arms up to shoulder height, and you are cleared to lift objects up to about 5 pounds.

When going through the initial recovery, you may likely be prescribed pain medications and muscle relaxants. Dr. Pfeifer advises using the muscle relaxant daily on a regular basis. Narcotic pain medication can be used if necessary.

You can, and should, get out of bed and walk around the evening after your surgery. This is to prevent blood clotting in the legs. However, make it a light, short stroll, with minimal stair climbing.

While short walks are beneficial, it’s also best to relax as much as possible after surgery. Going through a procedure can be tiring, and you’ll have less energy for the first couple of days. Take it easy, relax, and you’ll recover that much more quickly. Also, don’t forget that a healthy diet can speed recovery. So, drink plenty of fluids, take a calcium supplement, eat your veggies, and get enough protein and healthy fats to hasten the healing process.
