Who Can Benefit From Lip Augmentation?
Those who exhibit conditions like the following may benefit from lip augmentation:
- Small lips
- Thin or flat lips
- Asymmetrical lips
- Drooping lips
- Vertical lip wrinkles
Lip Augmentation With a Surgical Implant
Lip augmentation requires the placement of a soft silicone implant. The implant is shaped to provide a natural appearance and available in a variety of sizes. The implant can be removed if necessary. A very small incision is made and the implant is carefully inserted. Some bruising and sensitivity should be expected for up to two weeks after the surgery.
Lip Augmentation With Dermal Fillers
Juvederm has become a very popular option for non-surgical lip augmentation. The hyaluronic acid composition of Juvederm is well suited for injections into the lip, and the results last as long as 6 months. If you’re not sure about lip augmentation, Juvederm can provide an idea of how you will appear with enhanced lips. We also offer less expensive collagen fillers that can be used, but their longevity is typically less than that of Juvederm.
On the upper lips, Dr. Pfeifer injects the filler along the natural line of the vermillion border using a fine needle.
Vermillion: the skin and mucosa that makes up the lips.
Vermillion border: the border between the skin and mucosal layers.
Half of the upper lip is injected and then massaged to ensure smoothness, and then the process is repeated on the other side. The Cupid’s bow area is then molded, before moving on to the lower lips. Augmenting the lower lips is basically the same process, but may also involve injections near the oral commissures or laugh lines to slightly “turn up” the corners of the mouth.
Who Should Not Undergo Lip Augmentation?
Certain medical conditions can increase the risk of complications with lip augmentation, so we generally don’t recommend the procedure for people who experience cold sores, dental abscesses, skin eruptions, excessive oral plaque, or ulcers on the lips. When using a dermal filler, the regular contraindications will apply to that specific product, whether it is a hyaluronic acid filler like Juvederm or a collagen-based product.
Which Method Is Right For Me?
Many patients are satisfied by the fuller, smoother lips they have after undergoing lip augmentation. Some choose to maintain their new look with repeated filler injections and some do not. During a consultation with Dr. Pfeifer, you can discuss the available options and help you decide if or when you want to proceed with lip augmentation..
